Richard married Jane McLaughlin and lived in the Illies, Donegal, at the head of the River as my grandmother would refer to it. They were quite prosperous and big land owners. Apparently Richard provided much of the cash required by the Priest to build Cockhill Chapel, this money apparently saved the day as the priest over spent on the building of the chapel. Richard bought a farm in Ballyartan from his sister Sally and her husband Roger Doherty. The Parish Priest at Cockhill didn't want Richard buried in the graveyard as he objected to people from other counties being buried there. It was said to the Priest that "if he didn't let that man be buried there he may close the Church down." To be fair to the Parish Priest at the time he didn't know Richard.

Richard died on the 16/12/1926. Below is a copy of his Will and a statement of worth attached to it:

This is the last Will and Testament of me Richard Grant of Ballyartan. I appoint as my executors Owen Donaghey of Lettermuck and William Mullin of Lettermuck. I devise will and bequeath to my wife £100 to my daughter Mary Jane £100 to my son Dick £30 to my son William my farm stock crop and implements to the farm in Inishowen: to my sons Henry and John I give S????? Farm jointly; to my sons Patrick and Dick, Roger and Sarah Doherty’s farms jointly. The stock, crop and implements in Ballyartan and Lettermuck on my farms are to be equally divided between my four sons, Henry, John, Patrick and Dick. To Patrick I give Roger Doherty’s House and to Dick £100 to build a house. Henry is to live in house on S?????? Farm in which I reside and is to give my wife and daughter Mary Jane a room each with firing and funding and grass for a couple of cows. I have already made provision for my son Joseph and for my daughters Maggie and Teresa. Signed by testator this 18th day in February 1926 Richard Grants mark.
